Gene Expression Microarray
|
Gene expression profiling is the simultaneous measurement of the activity for thousands of gene transcripts or messenger RNA (mRNA). As specific mRNA sequences code for individual proteins, the expression level of mRNA for each gene provides a useful link to determining the relative abundance of proteins. Since only a fraction of genes are actively transcribing mRNA at a specific point in time, mRNA expression profiles capture a global snapshot of gene activity at that moment, enabling researchers to study the relationship of genes and cellular function within a certain environment or upon particular treatment conditions. Using patient tissues, gene expression profiling studies has allowed the characterization of the molecular basis of diseases from Alzheimer’s to breast cancer.
Whole genome microarrays are printed with thousands of DNA probes for essentially every annotated gene in an organism’s genome. These probes are comprised of unique gene segments and designed to bind specifically to each individual RNA transcript – enabling the investigation of expression profiles for cells and tissues in many different conditions.
